First run as a Produce Stakes in 1948, the Regency became an all-aged stayers’ feature in 1966 – it reverted to its original format for a couple of renewals in 2003 - and has lost none of its lustre during the past 60-odd years.
The list of previous winners is jam-packed with some hallowed names and, quite simply, the Coral Regency deserves its status as one of the most prestigious six-bend championships run under GBGB rules.
Greyhound racing first went metric in 1975 and Regency final night, which always generates a special atmosphere all of its own, will lure greyhound racing enthusiasts from all around the country.
The mighty Glin Bridge (1975), almost invincible on home soil and on the back of a leisurely triumph in the preliminaries, thwarted a spirited challenge of Streaky Sheila by three-parts of a length after a memorable buckle.

Twelve months later, in what was perhaps the most well-contested six-bend race staged at Hove in this scribe’s long association with the track, Glin Bridge vacated his crown when the equally great Westmead Champ accounted for the title-holder by two-and-a-half lengths in a new track record of 39.78sec.
In 1977, Bonzo, three months short of his fourth birthday, goes into the history books as one of the oldest winners in the race when coming home a length-and-a-quarter ahead of reigning champion Westmead Champ.
Only a few seconds remained between odds-on favourite Cosmic Orbit and certain victory in 1979, but Bob Young’s clear leader at the sixth bend tragically stopped with a broken hock leaving Gunner Smith’s Jingling Star to take full advantage.

Six years later the unorthodox Scurlogue Champ, the ultimate crowd-puller, stamped his supreme class on the event with a majestic five-and-a-quarter lengths defeat of local champion Star Decision.

Yankees Shadow, representing first-season handler Bill Masters, rewrote the history books when completing back-to-back victories in 1987.
In an epic encounter in 1990 Sail On Valerie, providing Ernie Gaskin with the third of his four Regency titles, had such outstanding stayers as Chicita Banana and Trans Mercedes in arrears.
A cracking line-up for the 1994 final resulted in a fine win for Decoy Cougar, who comfortably brushed aside the likes of Wexford Minx and Decoy Lynx.
The following year coincided with the most one-sided Regency final since its inception in 1948, as Charlie Lister’s top notch performer Suncrest Sail (1-20F) stormed to victory.
Knappogue Oak was awesome in 1999, when after setting a new track record in the opening round, Ken Bebbington’s ace came from a long way back to inflict a five-and-a-half lengths defeat on Tessas Dilemma.
In 2001 Killeacle Phoebe, who gave Brian Clemenson a fourth Regency success, led home a 1-2 for the Billingshurst maestro when defeating kennelmate Form Of Magic.
Wayne Wrighting’s Caloona Striker, the track record holder with an amazing wins-to-runs ratio on home soil, joins some of the all-time greats when scoring at the chief expense of Call Girl in 2006.
In 2007, the great Spiridon Louis, who subsequently collected the 2007 Greyhound of the Year accolade, came from last-to-first to score by a length-and-a-half from Westmead Sam in 41.15sec (+15).

A year later, Chris Lund’s Flying Winner (11-10F), one of the outstanding marathon performers of the past decade, thrilled racegoers when getting up in the shadow of the post to pip Ballymac Weeshie (9-4) by a neck in 41.40sec.
In 2010, the Dean Childs-trained Lorrys Options (5-2) supplemented his Golden Jacket victory when scoring by more than three lengths from Brimardon Star (6-1) in 41.32sec.
A year later, Claude Gardiner’s He Went Whoosh (7-1) made all the running when thwarting Capel Smiley (3-1) by a whisker in 41.26sec.
Other notable winners in the intervening years, include Fear Emoski (2013), Clares Kyletaun (2018), Aayamza Royale (2021) and Space Jet (2023) - it should be noted that marathon performers have a particularly good record over a course and distance where stamina is always at a premium.
